Pedestrian Killed In Crosswalk By Red Light-Running Van Driver In Prince George's County

One person was killed in a Prince George’s County crosswalk when a driver ran a red light and struck him, initially fled the scene but later returned, according to Maryland State Police investigators.

A 34-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by a van shortly before 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2 in the area of Central Avenue and Campus Way in Kettering.

The preliminary investigation found that a white truck ran a red light at the intersection, and struck the pedestrian while he was walking in the crosswalk. Investigators said that they believe the driver left the scene, but later returned.

Police say that the man’s identity is being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin.

The crash led to a road closure for several hours following the crash as state police investigated the fatal incident at the scene.

According to officials, the Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation in this case.

Once the Crash Team’s investigation is complete, they will submit their findings to the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether charges should be filed in this case.
